Te Mātāwai is one of Kāinga Ora’s innovative flagship projects providing much needed warm dry housing in Central Auckland. The development comprises of three towers linked by a central podium. The project will provide 276 residential homes combined with 24/7 support service provision on site that will be accessible to the public housing customers. The design includes a large number of communal spaces including shared kitchen, communal dining hall, computer room, recreation space and rooms for medical and wellbeing support to be provided on site. The mixed-use development introduces retail amenities, and commercial offices to service the building and the wider community.
Cultural design is significant throughout the complex, with local iwi Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei being pivotally involved since the early stages of the project through to completion. Introducing European ‘warm-wall’ façade systems, and ‘good practice’ healthy homes principles, the scheme is designed to achieve a Homestar 7 rating.
