Virgin Satellite Infill – Brisbane Airport

The Virgin Satellite Infill project at Brisbane Airport’s Domestic Terminal was designed to optimise passenger flow and expand terminal capacity. The project involved infilling the existing landscaped courtyard within the southern satellite, creating new floor areas on Levels 1 and 2 while integrating essential building services. This expansion represents the final development opportunity within this section of the terminal, ensuring it meets the growing demands of regional and domestic travel.

Design & Construction
By reclaiming underutilised space, the design increases circulation capacity to support upgraded aerobridges and accommodate higher passenger volumes. The new Level 1 enclosed space replaces the internal garden and natural lighting, with an open-plan layout that enhances flexibility for future interior planning. Level 2 incorporates various seating configurations, ensuring seamless integration with the expanded boarding gate zone. Acoustic and solar studies informed the spatial planning, mitigating impacts on comfort and functionality.

Outcome & Impact
Delivered under a Gross Maximum Price contract by Hansen Yuncken, the airside construction was carefully coordinated to minimise disruption. The expansion optimises Virgin Australia’s operations, providing additional workspace on Level 1 and an improved passenger experience on Level 2. This strategic infill project future-proofs the terminal’s infrastructure, aligning with Brisbane Airport Corporation’s long-term vision for growth and efficiency.
