Star Casino Green Roof

Situated in the heart of Sydney, the Star Casino Green Roof is one of Sydney’s largest expanses of rooftop green space.

MODE were engaged to design the 5000m2 green roof, working closely with City of Sydney, ecologists, horticulturists, contractors, suppliers and the client, to deliver the green roof successfully both on time and on budget.

Due to the scale and location, this green roof plays a key role in the ecology and biodiversity of the Pyrmont and inner Sydney area.

Through collaborative research with ecologists and local plant growers a planting palette that met the brief of improving the biodiversity of the site with a preference for locally indigenous plant species was designed.

A mixed palette of succulents, ground covers and grasses were meticulously selected for the project with natives, biodiversity and the shallow growing media profile leading the selection criteria. The addition of close to 20,000 plants to the heart of Sydney, provides a wealth of habitat, biodiversity and thermal cooling to the building within.

MODE established the technical aspects and constraints of the green roof structure with structural engineers and light-weight soil specialists.

This resulted in a construction methodology well suited to the project, the planting palette and the long term maintenance requirements.
