Honouring Robert McCray's 42-year architectural legacy, including 29 years at MODE.
JULY 2024
Robert McCray, who has devoted 42 years to the field of architecture, including 29 years at MODE, will retire at the start of August this year.
Joining MODE nearly three decades ago, Rob's unwavering passion for design, exceptional leadership qualities, and dedication to both his community and clients have been instrumental in fostering the expansion and success of MODE as an internationally renowned design practice.
Rob joined MODE as a Director in 2005 and has been integral in designing and delivering numerous significant projects across multiple sectors. Highlights include the delivery of eight new schools as part of the Western Australian Schools PPP as part of the EduWest Consortium, and the Charles Darwin University Education & Community Precinct which is due for completion this August.
Rob's contributions to the built environment and the architectural community are summed up well as he contemplates his 42-year journey in architectural practice.
“The profession has changed dramatically since I was a young student in the early 80’s, and our built environments reflect the changes in technologies, methodologies, and social priorities that have occurred during that time. For all of us, it is worth reminding ourselves that, despite these changes, architecture is fundamentally a human process: Architecture is not about the architect, everything that we do should remain focused on the people who occupy the spaces that we create.
When I joined MODE, I adopted a simple philosophy of saying “Yes” to the opportunities and not being afraid to move out of my comfort zone. This has allowed me to take on project roles that I would never have had the opportunity to do otherwise. I would encourage everyone to say “Yes”, take on the risk, don’t be afraid to fail.
I would like to take the opportunity to thank each and every one of you that I have had the pleasure of engaging with over my career. Every day I have learnt something new and been faced with unexpected challenges. In particular, I would like to thank everyone that I have worked with at MODE over the years, for the support and dedication you have shown, it has been my privilege to work with such talented and passionate people. I wish you all the best and thank you all for putting up with me for so long.”
Congratulations, Rob, on your well-earned retirement! May the next chapter of your life be filled with fantastic experiences.
