London based brand YO! Sushi approached MODE to design the first YO! Sushi food outlet in the Southern Hemisphere at Sydney Domestic Airport. MODE’s interior and graphic design teams collaborated with the international brand to develop a unique design echoing their playful urban identity and meeting strict food preparation, BCA, NCC and airport authority guidelines.
From the beginning, environmental graphics and signage were integrated into the architectural features. A combination of black chrome frames, polished concrete joinery and solid timber panels became the ideal canvas for deconstructed, graffiti-style graphics and bright eye-catching signage. The final element of urbanism was the neon lighting haloed by a black bolt graphic on the ceiling.
Holding true to the ‘live fast, eat well’ promise, YO! Sushi became the go-to for passengers. The outlet moved over 24 kilos of salmon and sold out of sushi within hours of opening.
