The effective use of steel in both the building’s facade and interior reflects the industrial nature of the centre. Large scale steel columns interlacing throughout the building create functional spaces. Interior features also act as a play on the industrial aesthetic that tie the spaces back to their overarching structural base. Elements of the design make reference to the high working standards and safety regulations within the trade industry, with ‘safety’ yellows, reds and greens complementing the muted grey colour scheme of the facility. The selection of fixtures, fittings and furniture relate back to the centre’s core of operations and highlight the needs of the end user.

MODE won the Australian Institute of Architecture Award for Sustainable Architecture at the 2016 Northern Territory Architecture Awards in Darwin for the work on the Charles Darwin University Trade Training Centre.
