The Australian Federal Police building is one of the first buildings to be built as part of ‘Project Jupiter’, a national initiative to provide Federal Police headquarters at each major airport in Australia.

The building was procured under a design and construct contract and MODE was commissioned by local builders, Sitzler, to assist them in designing the shell and core of the building to achieve a 5 star greenstar rating. As such, all aspects of this building were driven to achieve greenstar outcomes within the Green Building Council of Australia green star office design v3 framework.

The Australian Federal Police building provides the headquarters for police officers based at the Darwin Airport, giving them to a standalone facility from which to perform all aspects of their day to day duties. As a key building at the airport in a prominent location, it forms a focal point for visitors travelling to or from the airport terminal.

Designing a 5 star Greenstar rated building in Darwin with our hot-humid climate and, more particularly, our remote location while also complying with the detailed brief provided by the Australian Federal Police was very challenging. Nevertheless, MODE worked closely with Sitzler and the client group to ensure the outcome met the functional and operational needs of the client and user groups while also addressing their sustainability requirements.

The Australian Federal Police building illustrates the opportunities provided when client, Architect and builder work together with a common vision and towards a common goal. We enjoyed the challenges presented by this project and look forward to taking the lessons learnt into other projects in the future.
